Steve wins Classic Race at Philip Island on an 175HP 1294ccm Suzuki

Steve MARTIN gives his 41 years young body never a rest. Not even at his "Winterholidays" in the sunny down under. His Ford Mustang renovation had to be stopped for 1 week to take part at a Classicbike Racemeeting last weekend. Steve's passion for old vehilcles is even bigger than to new SBK  Bike Innovations. Almost the same crowd than at the Moto GP Round travelled to Philipp Island to watch the Classic dreams. Steve rode a 1294 cc Suzuki to the Pole , Trackrecord and to 4 Race win. Here is the full racereport :

Thunder of historic motorcycles draws big crowd to Phillip Island.

Phillip Island reverberated to the raucous sound of more than 350 different historic motorcycles from around the world last weekend during the 17th running of the AMCN International Island Classic.

A large contingent of British riders shipped their precious machinery from the United Kingdom in containers that left their shores in November. Riders and mechanics flew in last week to reunite with their beloved steeds at Phillip Island and ready themselves to take on a talented local field supported by an impressive contingent from across the Tasman.

This is one race meeting where the final result is not perhaps as important as the spirit in which the event is ran. Forgotten friendships are rekindled and famous faces from yesteryear remembered. Outside the race weekend the British contingent also do their best to reduce the stockpiles of various Australian breweries during their time Down Under.

One look throughout the field shows that parity of performance is something not really taken into account in Classic Road Racing. While the talent pool is deep, the variety and difference in performance across the various levels of the machinery is unlike anything seen in any other motorsport.

On board a fire breathing GSX1100 Suzuki was current World Endurance Champion Steve Martin. Tuned by drag racing guru Trevor Birrell the 1294cc machine delivered over 175 horsepower to its Pirelli slick while nearly pulling Martin's arms out of their sockets in the process. Martin is well accustomed to having that much horsepower at his disposal, but in a nimble package complete with a fairing rather than a mammoth Forgotten Era musclebike. Martin was a class act throughout the weekend and took an unchallenged four from four wins to leave the Island Classic with another trophy to add to his collection, along with arms a couple of centimetres longer than they had been before he jumped on the fearsome Suzuki.

Englishman Lea Gourlay was clearly the best of the rest. Also Suzuki mounted, Gourlay was at a huge horsepower disadvantage to Martin but put in a sterling effort to keep the Aussie in sight. The 39 year old enjoyed his first visit to Phillip Island immensely and quickly got on good terms with the fast 4.45km circuit.

Three second places handed Gourlay second overall for the meet but in the final stanza the Brit was relegated to fourth place by South Australian young gun David Johnson (Suzuki GSX1100) and Tasmanian Road Race legend Malcolm 'Wally' Campbell.

Johnson steadily progressed throughout the weekend and with second place in the final race, nearly managed to knock Gourlay out of second overall but had to settle for third ahead of one of the great characters of racing and nine-time Australian Champion, Robbie Phillis.

Campbell had a shocking weekend with mechanical gremlins striking his two-stroke RG500 Suzuki on Friday which were not fully resolved until the second half of the race schedule on Sunday. Campbell rode brilliantly in the third race to cross the line in second place behind Martin and ahead of Gourlay only to be relegated to fifth place by officials after being judged as jumping the start. Campbell finished third in the final race but due to the early mechanical gremlins never realised his full potential over the course of the event. Despite the frustrations this classy elder statesman of Australian racing toiled away with his pit crew throughout the weekend to make it back on track. While hiding his frustration, Campbell happily greeted every spectator that said hello. A fine gentleman.

Likewise Phillis was in his usual incredibly high spirits and always made time for any spectator wanting to walk into his pit bay to get an autograph or have a chat. The likeable larrikin of Australian racing, Robbie proved as entertaining as always and is always a hit with the punters.

While the famous personalities are indeed a big drawcard for spectators, the machinery in the paddock and the pits provides a rolling showcase of motorcycling through the ages. From the fire breathing Forgotten Era bikes this writer lusted after as a schoolboy, to the simplicity of BSA and AJS machinery produced in the 1930s which is even before my father was born, to the dream bikes of my father's own teenage years; Manx Norton, Matchless G50 and Vincent - all names stamped in motorcycle folklore and appreciated by motorcycle enthusiasts of all ages.

Despite the success of the weekend however there was still somewhat of a shadow cast over the event following a huge crash on Saturday that left English visitor Steve Maney with multiple fractures. Not the type of extended stay the 52-year-old Norton specialist was hoping for in Australia. New Zealander Rod Price was also caught up in the incident and suffered a broken leg.

Australia won the International Challenge with a 1283 point score to the United Kingdom's 911 and New Zealand's 682.

ORF broadcast the Bol d'Or Highlights on Saturday 7th November 21:45 at ORF Sport+

It was maybe the most disappointing race in 2009. But we left as World Champions Magny Cours and that was the most important. The Race was difficult and after winning 3 races we had very high aims, but every series stops one time. At the Bol d'Or only the technique could stop us. What stayed was the Title, the fastest racelap from YART and the message that YART never give up.

YART is WORLDENDURANCE CHAMPION 2009 .

Overheating of the enginge occurred on the Yamaha Austria Racing Team, and got even worst with some electric troubles. Stopped in the pits at 12:30, the YART went back on track for a last lap to ride under the chequered flag and ended up the race in the points. YART missed the victory and the podium, but is proud of having the 2009 Qtel FIM Endurance World title.

4th Place for YART at SUZUKA 8 Hours.

YART  finished at an impressive 4th place at Suzuka and missed the podium just for 1 minute, after the team received a stop and go penalty for non respecting the speedlimit at the pitstop. Anyway we miss just 1 point for winning the championship and we showed a big battle to all factory teams. After an incredible starting stint , Gwen overtook the bike to Steve as 4th.After 2 Hours it started to rain , it dry up and strted again to rain. All in all we are very happy with the result, even a 4th place feel always as lost podium.

Suzuka Qualifying: 14th place for YART

In tenth place after the first qualifying session, YART was expecting from Gwen Giabbani to do an even faster lap.Gwen managed already 2:12,0 with 25 lap old racetire, so we all expect him to make a 2:1o lap , but "I did not have one clear lap with the qualifying tyre", said a disappointed Gwen Giabbani after the afternoon session. YART will miss the "Special Stage", a Superpole opened to the best ten teams at the qualifications, and will start the race in fourteenth place with their best lap being 2'11.638.

YART makes it at Albacete: 4th victory in a row

Albacete was YART's 3rd step to the Worldchampiontile 2009. The Austrian staff managed under extrem conditions (+38 degrees) an another faultless race. Already in the 1st hour YART took the lead after a safly racestart from Gwen Giabbani.
At the first hours YART had to fight hard against the Michelin Power One team and Maco Moto, which both had 2 spain Riders on their bikes, which fighed with incredible courage. But YART didn't take a lot notice of their attacks, and kept cool and just made their race. At the end YART took the victory ove the spain top team Folch endurance  (3rd in EWC 2008) with close 1 lap.
The combination of the very experienced YART team , the 3 fast and clever riders Igor Jerman, Steve Martin and Gwen Giabbani, the very new Yamaha YZF-R1 and  Michelin seems to be unbeatable, at all 2009 EWC events as far.

This was already the 3rd victory in a row in 2009 and the 4th victory ,if you take the Last race from 2008 (Doha) in your account. Now YART have just 5 days time to prepare for the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hours , to be held on 26th July in Japan.

Another victory for YART at Oschersleben 8 Hours

The Yamaha Austria Racing Team took their second victory in the 2009 Qtel FIM World Endurance Championship at Oschersleben, giving them a 28 point lead in the championship. As with Le Mans, the Oschersleben round was affected by bad weather, the race itself was stopped briefly whilst a thunderstorm broke on the track and was eventually brought to an end after 6 hours and 40 minutes.
Yamaha riders Igor Jerman, Steve Martin and Gwen Giabbani were the team to watch from the offset off the weekend, dominating every session of free practice and qualifying to be top of the boards for each heat, taking Superpole, Fastest Race Lap and the chequered flag. The Yamaha YZF-R1 was clearly the best bike on the track and is looking a strong contender to take the 2009 championship.

Having also won the opening round of the championship at Le Mans, The Yamaha Austria Racing Team lead the championship with the maximum score of 65 points as they head to round three, the 8 Hours of Albacete on 4th July in Spain.

YART on POLE at Oschersleben 8 Hours

YART was already at the 2nd official practice fasterst overall. Igor didn't feel well so he refused his practice. Steve Martin put a low 1:27,XX already at the early afternoon in his session.  Gwen Giabbani was also fastest of his group with another 1:27,8 after his yesterdays 1st session. Unfortunatly he crashed hardly on his qualifying lap. the bike was destroyed completly. Fortunatly Gwen was not hurt , so there will be no problem for the race tomorrow afternoon. So Steve had to jump on the sparebike  Nevertheless he set the fastest ever Endurance lap in Oschersleben with 1.27,205. Thanks to Steve , who lifted the whole team with his experience to the next level.

YART wins the 24 hours of Le Mans

The Yamaha Austria Racing Team took their first victory of the endurance season on the new 2009 YZF-R1 at Le Mans yesterday. In what was one of the most intense Le Mans Endurance races for some time, YART riders Steve Martin, Igor Jerman and Gwen Giabbani battled flawlessly through difficult racing conditions including heavy rain for nearly 20 hours and a very damp track to take the chequered flag.

The YART team took victory with a clear seven lap advantage over the second placed Honda France team. Most competitor teams suffered crashes and incidents due to the adverse weather, making YART’s victory even more impressive.

The team rode the new for 2009, Moto GP derived Yamaha YZF-R1, building on the racing success already being seen in the hands of Ben Spies in World Superbike. The new machine proved the perfect tool to handle the difficult conditions with its unique crossplane crankshaft design giving the riders essentially smoother torque and more useable power to get through and out of the slippery corners of the Le Mans circuit. The new Michelin tires worked fantastic.

Gwen Giabbani, Yamaha Austria Racing Team
“Finally after 11 years of not winning! Igor waited 11 years for his second victory, for me it’s my first. There were no issues with the fantastic performance of the bike, and we lost very little time in stops. There were no crashes to be regretted, everything was perfect.”

Steve Martin, Yamaha Austria Racing Team
“It’s absolutely incredible to win here on my second time at the 24HR. The bike performed faultlessly which made the whole race easier. My team-mates both performed unbelievably, we made the right steps at the right times which gave us an advantage. We were then able to put pressure on the other teams and forced them to make mistakes. I want to dedicate this win to my life-long friend and mentor Peter Kerr who passed away this weekend, making this an exceptionally hard weekend’s racing for me. ”

Igor Jerman, Yamaha Austria Racing Team
“I’ve had to wait 11 years to win the Le Mans 24HR Moto. This year the team was very well prepared with the new Yamaha bike and we also changed tyres to Michelins which were great. We need to make some small changes for the next race but our result here was very good.”

Mandy Kainz, Yamaha Austria Racing Team Manager
“Everyone who’s dedicated to Endurance racing wants to win this race once in his life. I can hardly believe that we actually managed to do it. Igor Jerman, Steve Martin and Gwen Giabbani worked together as a proper team and had hardly any problems. Heavy rain, especially at night caused a lot of dramatic scenes. In the crucial phase of the race my boys managed to capitalize on their experience. I have to give them a lot of respect, they weren’t only the fastest out there but managed to ride faultlessly.”

YART missed the victory and the podium, but is proud of having the 2009 Qtel FIM Endurance World title.

image

4th Place for YART at SUZUKA 8 Hours.

YART  finished at an impressive 4th place at Suzuka and missed the podium just for 1 minute, after the team received a stop and go penalty for non respecting the speedlimit at the pitstop. Anyway we miss just 1 point for winning the championship and we showed a big battle to all factory teams. After an incredible starting stint , Gwen overtook the bike to Steve as 4th.After 2 Hours it started to rain , it dry up and strted again to rain. All in all we are very happy with the result, even a 4th place feel always as lost podium.

image
